1. Tell us a little bit about Cowboy’s Caviar. Who makes up your team?
Cowboy’s Caviar is a small family run business, all three of our adult kids work with us. In the past year we have added some excellent hardworking people to our team. These are the friendly faces you will see in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta.
2. How did Cowboy’s Caviar Beef Jerky come to be?
The founder of Cowboy’s Caviar, Irvan Berg, has a huge love of beef jerky as well as having the heart of a true entrepreneur. He decided he would come up with his own jerky brand and be his own boss at the same time. In 1998 he got busy working on recipes and a new process to develop a softer type jerky to give him something unique for the market and wala Cowboy’s Caviar Jerky was born.
3. What’s a typical day like at Cowboy’s Caviar?
There really is no such thing as a typical day at Cowboy’s Caviar. Every day is different and unique in its own way. Plans and schedules can change at a moment’s notice, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. It is what makes each and every day interesting! We love it.
4. What’s the most rewarding part about owning your own business?
The most rewarding part of owning our own business is seeing the enjoyment customers get when trying our product for the first time. You never grow tired of seeing the delight and hearing the wonderful feedback from our customers.
5. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world significantly over the past year. How has Cowboy’s Caviar had to adapt to the changing times?
Our biggest change was the cancellation of all the tradeshows we were booked into last spring. We had just geared up to expand into Alberta and Manitoba with tradeshows and Covid hit so we regrouped and decided to approach retail stores in Alberta and Manitoba instead. We have grown from around 300 stores in Saskatchewan to over 800 retail locations throughout Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba. We are very grateful for the opportunity each and every store has provided us to grow our business when no one really knew what to expect.
6. Your beef jerky comes in a variety of delicious flavours. How are they created?
The flavours of our jerky have evolved a bit over the years but the basics have pretty much stayed the same. They were created back in 1998 by mixing up a batch, and asking friends and family to sample, making adjustments until we got to where we are now with a finished product we all love. Any new product or flavour we put out there is a hands on creation until we feel it tastes just right.
7. Which three words best describe your company?
Friendly, reliable and of course delicious!
8. What do you like most about living and working in Western Canada?
Western Canada is full of some of the most friendly, hardworking, people we know. We are pleased to have been able to build long lasting relationships with many of these people. We also love the beautiful landscapes of the Prairies. Nature is awesome and we try to take time out to enjoy the sights and sounds every day; we are blessed to live in such a magnificent place.
9. What’s one thing about Cowboy’s Caviar that might surprise others?
Everyone loves the name! Cowboy’s Caviar along with Cowboy’s Candy flavour are both trademarked. This is how you will know you have the genuine product just look for the trademark symbol.
10. Are there any big goals you’re pursuing for Cowboy’s Caviar? What’s next for your company?
We have just recently released some new products into the Saskatchewan market. One new product is our Traditional jerky strips available in our Cowboy’s Candy, Original and Teriyaki flavours and then we have mini pepperoni in 3 new flavours Original, Smok’n Bacon, and Honey Garlic. We are working towards having these new products into the Alberta and Manitoba markets in the next year hopefully. After that it is anybody’s guess what will happen next helps to keep us all on our toes!
