Five Faves

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that at Sweet Market Esso we pride ourselves on our impressive selection of candy, and on making Gasoline Alley the sweetest place in Red Deer, Alberta. We often get questions from customers and social media followers on Facebook and Instagram about what products we carry, so today we’re shining a spotlight on five of our favourites that you certainly wouldn’t find in an average convenience store. It’s a good thing we’re anything but average, right?

Read on to learn about a line of candy that’s both vegan-friendly and Halal certified, a company that boasts over 90 flavours of saltwater taffy, a cotton candy shoppe located right here in Alberta, a space-race favourite lollipop, and the certified purveyors of chocolate to Belgian royalty!

1. Astro Pop Original

Travel back in time with us to the middle of the space race in 1963. Two enterprising rocket scientists who were working for the American space program decided to drastically change their career trajectories (pun totally intended). They quit their jobs and, using the three-stage rocket as inspiration, created Astro Pop Originals. These iconic cone-shaped lollipops still feature the three original flavours: cherry, passionfruit, and pineapple.

2. Sweeto Products

Owned by the parent company Fora Sweets, Sweeto is headquartered in Turkey. Its products include jellies, licorice, and lollipops. And the best part is, all Sweeto products are vegan friendly and Halal certified. We want Sweet Market to be a place where everyone can find a sweet treat, and have been focusing on finding an offering for our Muslim customers: Sweeto products defintley deliver!

3. Taffy Town Saltwater Taffy

Founded by James Glade and now run by his grandson, David, Taffy Town makes their saltwater taffy in a unique way. While most taffy companies pull their taffy, Taffy Town uses a whipped process that includes meringue. This results in taffy that’s both softer and chewier than you’d expect. They also come in a ton of fun and wacky flavours like maple-bacon! One taste and you’ll see why these folks have been known as the saltwater taffy experts for over 100 years.

4. The Cotton Candy Shoppe

Alberta’s premier cotton candy maker, all products from The Cotton Candy Shoppe are nut free, gluten free, egg free, soy free, and dairy free! Their cotton candy comes in a wide variety of flavours such as cream soda, pink vanilla, tiger tail, pina colada, and glazed donut. Some of their newest flavours include mango, mojito, and strawberry champagne. Yum!

5. Leonidas

Over 100 years ago, Leonidas Kestekidas started making pralines, and four generations later, his family continues this proud tradition. Leonidas chocolates are made in Belgium, and are the certified purveyors of chocolates to the Belgian royal household. That’s right: you can buy the same chocolates enjoyed by His Majesty Phillipe, King of Belgium, right here at Sweet Market Esso in Red Deer. You know who deserves to eat like a King or Queen? You!

Whew! We hope you enjoyed joining us on a tour of five of our favourite products. You can find Sweet Market Esso, and all of these tasty treats, at 172 Leva Avenue #101 on Gasoline Alley in Red Deer.
